The game of 5 Card Stud can be both entertaining and lucrative, but there are a few common mistakes that beginners make entirely too often. Because this is a poker game, with real money on the line, mistakes aren’t something to wave off lightly. These mistakes are costly errors that should be avoided 100% of the time. If you can’t stay clear of these 5 Card Stud Common Mistakes, you might as well donate your bankroll to charity – at least you’re guaranteed something back on your taxes.

The most common mistakes in 5 Card Stud include disappointment in Folding, lack of patience and improper bankroll management.

Disappointment In Folding

When a player has contributed to the pot for the first three betting rounds, but finds himself in a likely losing situation upon the final betting round, he must Fold. Too many times, a player wants to Call the force-doubled Fifth Street bet simply because he has already contributed so much into the pot. The fact is, if analyzing the face-up cards on the table compared to your own hand does not give you enough confidence that you will win, throwing more money into the pot is like flushing it down a toilet. Your best bet is to Fold, leaving enough bankroll behind to keep playing and hopefully win back what you’ve just wisely forfeited.

Lack of Patience

Getting a good Starting Hand in 5 Card Stud does not happen often. So many players lack the discipline to wait patiently for a good Starting Hand. Those that have the patience to begin with may often lose patience and start looking for anything half decent to bet on. This is probably the most common mistake in 5 Card Stud. If you want to become a successful poker player, you MUST acquire the patience and discipline to wait for a good Starting Hand.

Bankroll Management – Advancing In Limits

Be sure not to advance through the limit levels too quickly. Just because you are breaking even or making a small profit at the low-limit tables does not mean you are ready to advance to higher stakes. You must realize that higher stakes means tougher opposition. Unless you are winning most of your matches on a regular basis, you are not ready to advance.

Bankroll Management – Chasing Losses

This 5 Card Stud common mistake falls into the same category as ‘Advancing in Limits’, but is done so for an entirely different reason. Many beginners will find themselves losing $10 or $20 here and there. They come to the conclusion that they could regain these losses in a single swoop by taking down one high stakes table. Please do not make this common mistake! If you can’t beat the opposition at lower stakes, what makes you believe you will take down more experienced opponents? 5 Card Stud is not just a game of luck. There is much skill and strategy involved. Chasing losses will only incur more losses. Be smart, implement a strategy and do not let yourself lose more than you can afford (i.e. don’t wager the rent/mortgage payment!)
