Knowing when you have a good Razz Starting hand is absolutely essential in any good Razz poker strategy. Because this is a ‘Lowball’ game, meaning the lowest ranking poker hand wins the pot, the best Starting Hands in Razz vary immensely from that of most poker games.

The basic rules state that Aces are always counted as low cards and Straights and Flushes are not considered combinations. Beginner poker players must keep this in mind when determining the strength of their Razz Starting Hands.

A good Starting Hand in Razz is one that has no card exceeding an 8, with no pairs. For example 3, 5, 6 – 2, 7, 8 – A, 4, 5 – etc… These are all good Razz Starting Hands.

A-2-3 is the best Starting Hand in Razz. With this hand, a player should always move forward!

As far as general Razz strategy is concerned, any time your first three cards consist of a pair or a face card, Fold. There are exceptions to this rule however:

-Ace or Deuce + low pair (A-2-2, A-3-3, A-A-2, A-A-3, 2-3-3)

- your highest card is lower than any Door Card (face-up) on the table (example: your highest card is 10, but each of your opponents are showing 10 or better)

Patience is an essential element of winning Razz, or any poker game for that matter. Maintaining the patience and calm composure to Fold as many times as necessary, without getting frustrated, is one of the hardest traits for a beginner poker player to develop. Master this aspect of Razz, and you’re bankroll will prove its worth.
